Interiors.net was at Dwell on Design this past weekend. The must-attend yearly event in Los Angeles for modern design enthusiasts, designers, architects, consumers and buyers. Dwell on Design, curated by the editors of Dwell Magazine, is rapidly becoming the leading voice of the modern design movement.

Although the show’s hundreds of exhibitors consisted mostly of high-end companies touting their latest innovations in design, Dwell was successful in including a vast array of exhibitors that appealed to all walks of life. We observed families with children in tow, and toddlers who’s mothers couldn’t pry them away from Fongadanga’s latest creation, Kazzam, a toddler and children’s play-table created by architect Magda Lattin. I spoke with Magda about the appealing qualities of her piece and learned that she is not only an architect and designer but an avid sculptor. Her simple yet colorful design looks just as much an art piece as it does a functional play-table for children.

From their panel of industry experts, hundreds of exhibitors and celebrity spokespersons passionate about modern design, Dwell on Design produced a show that highlighted up and coming design and proved how elegant and intriguing being eco-aware can be. The event also conveyed how truly passionate designers and architects are about delivering exemplary design through their products, art and building projects. Dwell presented Awards on Friday in several catagories: winners of Dwell on Design Awards and Modern World Awards.

The show reflected how eco-awareness has completely permeated the helm of high-end modern design. Companies such as Cambria, the only U.S. producer of quartz countertops, have always been one step ahead of their competitors when it comes to making our lives eco-friendly; both established companies and newcomers alike are taking sustainability measures from behind the scenes of the manufacturing process to successfully communicating their organization’s values and commitment to sustainability directly into their product lines. As more and more companies deliver products that are safe to use and safe for our environment, we can look forward to our homes and lifestyles becoming more beautiful and reflective of the eco-consciousness that our world so valuably needs.

Though the “green” theme at Dwell on Design could not go unnoticed, the event stayed true to Dwell’s promise. With the architect and design industry in the billions of dollars per year, Dwell on Design delivered a show relevant to what one might expect from Dwell. They addressed the needs of those in the industry and the public. Their modern design event successfully showcased the best of the best. The collaborative opportunities from Architect Marc Kushner co-founder of Architizer, offered up a flavor of expertise that permeated the show. Marc’s free consultations on blue prints design allowed architects a rare and instant opportunity to consult and collaborate. A panel of industry experts including a brilliant commentary and open dialogue with Kathy Ireland, who offered personal insights into the success of her 1.9 billion dollar a year empire.

Celebrity ambassadors of eco awareness and Modern Design were in attendance including actor Ed Begley Jr., an avid environmentalist as well as Mariel Hemingway, granddaughter of author Ernest Hemingway. Mariel, a Cambria partner and long time ambassador of wellness delivered penetrating insight into eco awareness as an expert speaker on sustainability, not to mention, she was utterly stunning!

Since I’ve attended the show, many people have asked me who my favorite exhibitor was. Without a doubt, ecofabulous’s Modern Living showhouse takes the prize. The Modern Living home is a one-of-a-kind green designer home by Zem Joaquin CEO of Ecofabulous. The home represents a real life example of not only what we can do now to lead more eco-conscience lives but Zem and her team have successfully planted a seed for the future in modern design. Her concept is safe for the environment without compromising beauty. In true ecofabulous fashion, the modular home will go up for sale on eBay Giving Works with proceeds benefitting Global Green USA The auction ends mid July.

If you missed Dwell on Design this past weekend in Los Angeles, be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s 2012 event. As I said before, it’s a must attend for all!
